Toddlers and Young Children

When working with toddlers and young children, I provide warm, developmentally informed psychological support.

I have a particular interest in supporting children with chronic health conditions and early developmental challenges. This includes working with difficulties such as encopresis, longstanding constipation, psychogenic abdominal pain, and other presentations where physical symptoms are closely linked with emotional distress. I am experienced in supporting families where these difficulties have been present for some time and where progress may have felt slow or stalled.

My approach balances empathy with practical guidance, helping families feel understood while also providing clear, realistic plans that can be embedded into everyday life. When working with this age group, I draw on creative modalities such as play and the arts, and where appropriate I liaise with nurseries and schools to support a joined-up approach around the child.

Toileting Difficulties

I have a specialist interest in supporting children and young people who experience ongoing toileting difficulties. These can include challenges with potty training, toilet refusal, stool withholding often linked to a fear of pooing, urine withholding, daytime wetting and soiling. I work with children from as young as 2 years old through to adolescence and up to 18, and I strongly believe that it is never too late to seek support for toileting difficulties. Meaningful change is possible at any age with the right understanding and approach.

As a parent of a child who has previously faced significant toileting challenges, I know first-hand how isolating and exhausting this journey can feel. That lived experience has shaped my commitment to providing compassionate, practical and hopeful support to other families.

I work closely with paediatric gastroenterologists and collaborate with ERIC, The Children’s Bowel and Bladder Charity, where I deliver psychology-informed training courses for both professionals and families. This ensures that the support I provide is grounded in current clinical understanding and carefully tailored to the individual needs of each child or young person.

Adolescents

When working with adolescents, I provide psychological support for a wide range of emotional and developmental difficulties, including anxiety, low mood, phobias, self esteem, behaviour experienced as challenging, relationship difficulties, and school or exam related stress. I also have extensive experience supporting young people who are navigating the emotional impact of physical health difficulties.

My work often includes supporting adolescents living with chronic health conditions, psychosomatic or functional pain, and medically unexplained symptoms, as well as the challenges that can come with these experiences such as school absence, managing academic demands, social isolation, embarrassment and reduced confidence. I am particularly mindful of how physical symptoms, emotional wellbeing and identity development can interact during adolescence.

I have particular expertise in working with young people who have diagnosed health conditions, learning difficulties and Autism. I take a flexible, individualised approach, adapting therapy to meet each young person’s needs and developmental stage. Therapeutic approaches include cognitive behavioural, systemic, narrative and solution focused work.

I am trained in the administration of neurological cognitive assessments and the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule 2. For cognitive assessments, I collaborate with Dr Chandi Gedara, whose details can be found here.

Make Contact

I welcome you to make contact letting me know a bit about what support you are looking for and sharing any questions you have for me. I can then discuss my availability and, if appropriate, we can arrange an initial consultation.

Initial consultation

I always start with a parent only initial consultation. This is an opportunity to find out more about what you are wanting help with and allows space for you to talk openly about your concerns without your child being present. I will ask about your best hopes for the work and we will make a plan together about the next steps.

Therapy and interventions

Some children and their families see me for a brief number of sessions for help with a specific difficulty, while others use the sessions for an ongoing space to manage challenges. Together with you, we will make a clear plan at the start of the work and I will ensure that we regularly review this.

Session fees

In depth withholding intervention- £200.
